Burning the Wedding Dress: A Viral Divorce Healing Photo Shoot That Helped a Woman Reclaim Her Power

When divorce shatters a life you once imagined, sometimes the most powerful step forward is choosing yourself again. Earlier this fall, I had the honor of documenting something I will never forget: a transformational photo shoot where Lindsay Hordal burned her wedding dress, ceremony photos, and marriage paperwork to symbolize healing, closure, and rebirth.

The session took place at Jamieson Creek in Kamloops, BC, and has since gone viral — even being featured in PEOPLE Magazine. But the story behind the flames is far more meaningful than the headlines.

Why Lindsay Burned Her Wedding Dress

After a long and emotionally exhausting divorce, Lindsay felt ready to close the chapter that had dimmed her light for far too long. Inspired by “wreck the dress” ideas she’d seen online, she decided to turn the symbolic act of burning her wedding items into a personal ritual of release.

“It was me relighting my inner flame after being with somebody who really dimmed my light for so long,” Lindsay shared.

What she expected to be a quiet, private ending became something much bigger — a moment of strength, clarity, and reclaiming her identity.

A Phoenix Moment

As a photographer, I’ve captured thousands of stories, but this one felt different. Standing behind the lens, I watched Lindsay transform in real time — anger melting into peace, grief shifting into relief, and finally, a sense of freedom settling into her shoulders.

At one point, we both saw a flame rise in the shape of a phoenix in the photo — a visual representation of exactly what she was stepping into: rebirth.

“You could see her metamorphosis,” I said during the interview. “It was like she was shedding the old version of herself — boom.”

The moment she tossed her marriage paperwork into the fire felt like watching someone walk out of their past and firmly into their future.

Divorce Isn’t a Failure — It’s a Rebirth

Lindsay described her marriage as a place where she became “lonely in every way,” and ultimately, leaving saved the parts of herself she feared losing forever.

“I walked out in such a better place — emotionally, physically, financially,” she said. “This shoot was the end piece. The closure I needed.”

But she still believes in love. She still believes in connection. She still believes in joy.

Burning the dress didn’t represent bitterness — it represented rebirth.

Why Sessions Like This Matter

This session went viral with more than 165,000 likes, and I received messages from women around the world. Many said the images gave them strength. Others said they finally felt seen.

Some called it “dark.”

But in reality, it was anything but.

This was celebration.

This was healing.

This was rebirth.

Divorce doesn’t make you broken.

It doesn’t mean you failed.

It means you tried.

It means you survived.

And now, it means you get to choose yourself.

Creating Empowering Photo Experiences for Women

This shoot reminded me how deeply photography can change someone’s life — not just capture it.

Whether it’s:

• A post-divorce empowerment session

• A “burn the dress” ritual

• Boudoir portraits to reconnect with your confidence

• A couples session to celebrate a new beginning

• A wedding or elopement story

• Or simply wanting to feel beautiful again…

I’m here for it.

Helping women reconnect with their strength, power, and identity is one of my greatest passions.

Photography is my happy place — and I’m ready to travel anywhere to create sessions that mean something.
